Top Picks: My Favorite Food Spots in Jakarta (September 2024)

Indonesia is renowned for many things, and food is undoubtedly one of them. In Jakarta, the dining scene is incredibly vibrant, offering everything from local mom-and-pop eateries to sophisticated fusion fine dining. The restaurant landscape here is ever-evolving, with new spots constantly popping up. It's astonishing how frequently fresh, buzz-worthy places pop up—almost every weekend brings not just one, but several viral newcomers, each managing to outdo the competition. The turnover of restaurants speaks volumes about the deep love Indonesians have for food and how integral it is to their culture.

Living in Jakarta, these are my top picks that I commonly frequent and love to visit:

Braud General Store

If you're ever in Jakarta and craving some quality baked goods, I highly recommend stopping by Braud General Store. As a huge fan of high quality baked goods, this place comes close if not better than the baked bread and pastries I've had in Europe. It’s perfect for a laid-back coffee break or a casual meet-up with friends. While the outdoor space is a bit limited, the warm and welcoming vibe inside more than makes up for it.

Braud is known for its artisanal goodies, and I couldn't resist trying their famous sourdough bread—definitely lived up to the hype. The almond croissant was also incredible, with just the right balance of crispiness and flavor. The coffee is equally as good and my go-to place for my daily flat white fix.

Uma Oma Cafe

Uma Oma Cafe has this wonderfully nostalgic vibe, with vintage decor that instantly makes you feel at home. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, perfect for escaping the hustle of the city.

Uma Oma specializes in traditional Indonesian dishes, and they’re just as comforting as the ambiance. The best part? The food really feels like a home-cooked meal. Combined with the warmth of the Oma staff, it’s as if you’ve been invited to a family gathering. Uma Oma Cafe is definitely a place to visit if you’re craving authentic Indonesian flavors in a nostalgic, heartwarming setting.

Dan's Burgers

If you're on the hunt for an amazing burger spot in Jakarta, look no further than Dan's Burgers. They specialize in smash burgers, which means crispy edges and a juicy center, and they totally nail it.

The vibe inside is laid-back but with a cool, nostalgic touch. They’ve got an open kitchen setup, so you can watch as they smash those patties to perfection. It’s a chill space, with bar stools lined up along a long corridor, perfect for a quick bite. Plus, the greenery outside gives the place a refreshing, inviting feel.

The Classic Smashburger is the star of the show—made with smashed beef, plain buns, gooey cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and their signature sauce. It’s simple but packed with flavor, and every bite is incredibly satisfying. Pair that with their curly fries, and you've got a match made in burger heaven.

One thing I loved about Dan’s Burgers is the freshness of everything. You can tell they put a lot of care into every order. Whether you’re a burger fanatic or just in the mood for a tasty, no-frills meal, Dan’s Burgers is definitely worth a visit. The friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, and mouthwatering food make it a new favorite in Jakarta’s growing food scene. If you haven’t been yet, you’ve got to check it out!

Pagi Sore (Cipete)

If you're craving authentic Padang cuisine in Jakarta, Pagi Sore is definitely a spot you need to try. They have multiple locations but for some reason I keep coming back to their venue located on Jl. Cipete II. Pagi Sore is known for its traditional Indonesian dishes, especially their famous rendang—and trust me, they live up to their claim as the "Jagonya Rendang" (King of Rendang). While the restaurant actually hails from Palembang, it’s become a go-to place for those looking to satisfy their Padang food cravings in Jakarta.

The ambiance is perfect for families or groups, with a spacious layout that manages to stay comfortable even when it’s packed. And it does get busy, especially around the holidays, but that just shows how popular it is. Despite the crowds, the vibe remains welcoming, and the service is quick and friendly.

One thing to note is that it can get busy, and there’s often a wait during peak times. But honestly, the food is so good that it’s worth the wait. Prices are a bit on the higher side, with main courses ranging from IDR 50,000 to 100,000, but for the quality of the food, it’s totally reasonable.

All in all, Pagi Sore is the place to go if you’re after authentic Indonesian flavors in a relaxed setting. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, it’s a must-visit for anyone who loves Padang food.

Billy's Block

If you’ve ever wanted a taste of New York City without leaving Jakarta, Billy’s Block in Senopati is the perfect spot. It feels like you’ve stepped into a cozy New York neighborhood. Located in the Senopati Suites, Billy’s Block brings a slice of Brooklyn to the heart of Jakarta, and it’s full of character.

The ground floor features Billy’s Deli, where you can grab some delicious New York-inspired street food, the menu is packed with tasty options. What really makes Billy’s Block stand out is the thoughtful storytelling behind the whole place. Inspired by the life of Billy, a Brooklyn native, every detail—from the décor to the vinyl corner where you can browse records—tells a story. There’s even a bodega concept that supports local businesses, which adds a cool community vibe to the space.

Overall, Billy’s Block is more than just a place to eat; it’s an experience. Whether you’re there for a casual breakfast, some classic New York-style street food, or a laid-back evening with good music, it’s got something for everyone. If you’re in Jakarta and want to experience a little slice of New York with a local twist, this is the place to go!

Pot Boy Aru (Row 9)

Pot Boy Aru is a cozy, delicious dining experience in Jakarta, Blok M and it should definitely be on your list to visit.

From the moment you walk in, the space feels warm and welcoming. While it’s not the largest restaurant, it’s designed in a way that makes you feel comfortable, with plenty of room to relax without feeling cramped. It’s perfect for a casual meal or a gathering with friends. The decor is charming and adds to the overall homey vibe, making it an enjoyable spot to unwind.

Pot Boy Aru has a diverse menu, and the dishes are as visually appealing as they are flavorful. One of the highlights has to be their signature pots, which not only look great but are packed with unique flavors. Whether you’re trying something new or sticking with your favorites, you’re in for a treat. Just a heads up, though—this place is popular, so you might want to make a reservation, especially on busy days. The service here also adds to the experience. The staff is super friendly and attentive, ensuring you have everything you need to enjoy your meal without any hassle.

In short, Pot Boy Aru is a must-visit if you’re in Blok M or anywhere nearby. The combination of cozy ambiance, delicious food, and top-notch service makes it a standout spot in Jakarta.
